Understanding the Gospel: What It Truly Means to Be a Christian

Beyond mere affiliation, being a Christian is an embodiment of the divine truths enshrined in the Bible. Join us as we explore the foundational principles that define our faith.

Embracing God’s Sovereign Creation: In a world that champions evolution, the Bible unveils a different truth. We are not accidental outcomes; we are creations lovingly fashioned by a personal God. Jesus Himself is the Creator of all things, signifying His authority over every aspect of our lives (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16).

We owe Him unwavering allegiance, obedience, and worship, for He is the sovereign ruler of all (Psalm 103:19).

The Holiness of God: God’s holiness is absolute and unblemished (Isaiah 6:3), making Him incapable of condoning evil (James 1:13). This same holiness is expected of us. As 1 Peter 1:16 asserts, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.

Humanity’s Struggle with Sin: Scripture reveals that all have fallen short and sinned (1 Kings 8:46). While we might exhibit acts of kindness, we remain incapable of understanding, loving, or pleasing God on our own (Romans 3:10-12).

The Weight of Sin’s Consequence: God’s justice demands that sin incurs eternal death (Ezekiel 18:4; Romans 6:23). Mere behavioural change cannot erase our sin problem or its ramifications.

The Lordship and Salvation of Jesus: Romans 10:9 declares, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” Though God’s justice necessitates death for sin, His love provided a Savior—Jesus—who bore the penalty for sinners (1 Peter 3:18). Christ’s sacrifice satisfied God’s justice and holiness, enabling Him to forgive and save those who put their faith in Him (Romans 3:26).

The Nature of Genuine Faith: True faith coincides with repentance from sin. Repentance involves acknowledging our sinfulness, confessing our sins, turning away from them (Luke 13:3, 5; 1 Thessalonians 1:9), pursuing Christ (Matthew 11:28-30; John 17:3), and obediently following Him (1 John 2:3). Authentic faith goes beyond acknowledging facts; it responds in loving obedience (Ephesians 2:10).
